Distribution Pattern of Species Richness of Endemic Genera in Mountainous Areas of Southwest China and Its Influencing Factors

China’s southwest mountainous region is one of the hotspots of biodiversity in the world. However, the study on the pattern of species richness distribution of endemic plants in this region and its influencing factors is still in the exploration stage. A clear regional spatial distribution pattern of plants and its influencing factors are very important for the protection and management of plant diversity in southwest China. In this study, 511 county-level regions in the southwest mountainous region were taken as examples to establish a plant species resource bank in the southwest mountainous region, and the distribution pattern of the proportion and abundance of endemic plant families and genera was analyzed based on 19 climate and environmental factors and 8 human disturbance factors in the southwest mountainous region. The geographical weighted regression model (GWR) was used to reveal the main factors affecting the spatial distribution of species. The results showed that: (1) A total of 4688 species investigated in the southwest mountain belong to 19 families and 32 genera. (2) The endemic species richness in the southwest mountainous region showed a significant uneven spatial pattern, mainly concentrated in the Heng Duan Mountain area, southwest Sichuan and northern Yunnan area, and the Ruoergai-Hongyuan area of West Sichuan Plateau. (3) The results of the GWR model showed that the diurnal mean temperature range, precipitation seasonality and distance from the main road had significant effects on species richness. The study on the distribution of endemic genera and their influencing factors in the southwest mountainous region has important implications for the exploration of the evolutionary history and species conservation of the mountain flora.

Fruit–frugivore dependencies are important in Ebolavirus outbreaks in Sub‐Saharan Africa

Ebolaviruses have the ability to infect a wide variety of species, with many African mammals potentially serving either as primary reservoirs or secondary amplifying hosts. Previous work has shown that frugivorous bats and primates are often associated with spillover and outbreaks. Yet the role that patterns of biodiversity, either of mammalian hosts or of common fruiting species such as Ficus (figs, fruit resources used by a wide variety of species), play in driving outbreak risk remains unclear. We investigated what factors most directly influence Ebolavirus outbreak risk in Sub‐Saharan Africa by using a phylogenetically informed path analysis to compare a wide array of potential models (path diagrams) of spatial dynamics. We considered mammalian frugivore richness, cercopithecid and hominid primate richness, richness of pteropodid (fruit) bats, the spatial distribution of species that have tested positive for Ebolavirus antibodies in the wild, Ficus habitat suitability, and environmental conditions (mean annual and variability in temperature and rainfall). The proximate factors that most influenced whether a given host species range contained a site of a previous outbreak event were 1) habitat suitability for Ficus and 2) the diversity of cercopithecid primates. Frugivore richness overall (including bats, primates, and a few other mammals) and the richness of bats in the family Pteropodidae had a strong effect on which species tested positive for Ebolavirus antibodies, but did not influence outbreak risk directly in pathways explored. We interpret this as evidence that foraging around Ficus and frugivorous mammals (such as cercopithecid primates which are commonly hunted for food) play a prominent role in driving outbreaks into human communities, relative to other factors we considered which influence outbreak risk more indirectly.

Quantification of the spatial distribution of individual mangrove tree species derived from LiDAR point clouds

AbstractMangrove forests have unquestionably high environmental and ecological value. Mangrove trees are believed to have habitat zonation that is controlled mainly by the relative sea level. However, earlier discussions of mangrove habitats have remained limited in terms of their quality and quantity because of a lack of high-resolution spatial information of microtopography and trees. To clarify mangrove habitability over a wide forest area, we compounded mobile laser scanning (MLS) and aerial laser scanning (ALS) LiDAR dataset of the Miyara River mangrove on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan. The MLS provided sub-canopy data, while the unmanned aerial vehicle ALS data mainly provided a point cloud of the canopy. We corrected point clouds and combined these data. The results indicated that ALS is unable to reconstruct the microtopography of the dense mangrove area well. Moreover, tree species were not identifiable from the ALS data. However, by applying MLS to the mangrove forest, we obtained high-resolution microtopography and tree information inside the forest, although the measurement area was limited to comparison with ALS. By combining ALS and MLS point clouds, 3D point clouds of the forest were well reconstructed. From these point clouds, a high-resolution digital elevation model was created. Subsequently, we segmented trees individually from composite MLS point clouds and identified each tree species. Consequently, the spatial distribution of thousands of mangrove trees was reconstructed at the Miyara River mouth. The spatial distribution of mangrove tree species together with earlier aerial photographs suggests that mangrove species have been segregated in accordance with changes in their elevation and environment over 40 years. Our findings suggest that the distribution of the species changed sensitively along with dynamic variation of the microtopography.

Predicting the effect of climate change on the geographic range of the Mediterranean relict tree Liquidambar orientalis Mill

Climate change is anticipated to pose a significant danger to the habitats and spatial distribution of species in the Mediterranean region throughout the present century. The primary objective of this study was to predict the future geographic range of Liquidambar orientalis, commonly known as the oriental sweetgum under different climate change scenarios. This species is a relict riparian Mediterranean plant originating from the southwestern Anatolia region and Rhodos Island in Greece. To gain insights into the potential effects of climate change on the range of L. orientalis in the future, I used an ensemble modeling approach of species distribution models based on the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP1‐2.6 and SSP5‐8.5 for the years 2035, 2055 and 2070). The models suggested that the level of precipitation during the wettest month has a crucial role in determining the occurrence of the oriental sweetgum tree. Future projections indicate that the oriental sweetgum will significantly contract its native distribution range due to warming and declining precipitation levels. The population of L. orientalis has previously undergone a decrease as a result of anthropogenic activity. Therefore, it is imperative to augment the degree of urgency in conservation endeavors for the oriental sweetgum species against the ramifications of human‐induced actions and the persistent effects of climate change.

Anatomy of the Class I protostar L1489 IRS with NOEMA. I. Disk, streamers, outflow(s) and bubbles at 3mm

Over the past few years, chemical studies have revealed multiple structures in the vicinity of young stellar objects (YSOs). It has become evident that specific physical conditions are associated with the emission of particular molecular lines, allowing us to use molecular probes of the YSO physics. Consequently, chemical surveys are now necessary to fully constrain the origin of the observed structures. Several surveys have been conducted to explore the chemistry of YSOs, focusing on Class 0 and Class II objects. However, our knowledge of intermediate objects, that are Class I objects, remains limited. To bridge the gap and establish the relationship between observed structures and molecular line emission at the Class I evolutionary stage, we investigate the spatial distribution of key molecular gas species in the low-mass Class I protostar L1489 IRS (IRAS 04016+2610), a source part of the ChemYSO survey. We performed a 3mm line survey at high spatial and high spectral resolution using the NOEMA interferometer and the IRAM-30m telescope. For the data analysis, we applied and compared two methods: a streamline model and the new python package TIPSY We present here the ten brightest lines of our survey, in which we identified a new sim \,3\,000 au long streamer in HC3N C2H and c-C3H2 emission, likely associated with more localized accretion shocks probed in SO. In addition, two sim \,10\,000 au bubbles are seen with the dense molecular tracers HCO^+ CS, and HCN around the YSO. We retrieve previously identified structures, like an outflow in HCO^+ and another streamer in C2H . Additionally, potential indicators of a second outflow appear in CS and HCN emission, but its nature remains to be confirmed. The late infall identified at large scales may originate from the nearby prestellar core L1489 and is likely responsible for the formation of an external warped disk in this system. The detection of a potential second outflow could be the direct evidence of a binary system. Finally, we hypothesize that the bubbles may result from the magnetic pressure as observed in numerical simulations.

Using density surface models to assess the ecological effectiveness of a protected area network in Tanzania

AbstractGiven recent global endeavors to increase protected area coverage, it is crucial to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of various area‐based conservation strategies in effectively reducing biodiversity loss. Here, we investigated the responses of wildlife populations to different protection levels and environmental variables at the landscape scale in the Katavi–Rukwa Ecosystem, western Tanzania. To this end, we conducted line distance sampling surveys and counted the dung of six target mammal species (elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, topi, and hartebeest) along foot transects within areas differing in protection levels (from strict to less‐strictly protected: national park, game reserve, forest reserve, game‐controlled area, and unprotected areas). Based on these dung counts, we modeled the spatial distribution of these six mammal species using a species‐specific density surface modeling framework. We found consistent effects of protection level and land use variables on the spatial distribution of the target mammal species: dung densities were highest in the national park and game reserves, intermediate in less‐strictly protected areas, and lowest in unprotected areas. Beyond species‐specific environmental predictors for dung densities, our results highlight consistent negative associations between dung densities of the target species and distance to cropland and avoidance of areas in proximity to houses. Our findings underpin differences in ecological effectiveness of protected areas within one ecosystem. Protection level and land use play crucial roles in moderating the spatial distribution of all considered mammal species. Our findings suggest that a landscape approach needs to guide effective conservation across the entire protection gradient of the Katavi–Rukwa Ecosystem.

Dual-gate design enables intrinsic safety of high-energy batteries

The safety issue hampers the application of high-energy lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, grid energy storage, electric ships and aircrafts. The chemical cross-talk, which refers to the migration of energetic intermediates between cathode and anode, initiates battery self-heating and accelerates the intensive heat release during battery thermal failure. However, blocking the chemical cross-talk is extremely hard. Previously, we may expect a thermally stable separator can guard the gate between battery cathode and anode, however, large amount of hot gas breaks the defense mechanically not thermally. Draining the cross-talk gas is of equal importance with blocking it. Herein, a dual-gate design notion is proposed, using separator as “block gate” and vent valve as “removal gate” to regulate the spatial distribution of energetic species to reduce the major heat release during battery thermal runaway. The design is validated by more than 50 battery chemistries. Typically, the maximum temperature of NMC811||Gr pouch cell decreases from >800 °C to <300 °C, the highest temperature rising rate decreases from 761.0 °C/s to 0.013 °C/s. The morphology and crystalline change of cathode verify that the chemical cross-talk is successfully suppressed. Moreover, such design has little side effect on the electrochemical performance of batteries. The dual-gate design breaks the bottleneck for the safety design of high energy batteries, providing insight into the safe utilization of electrochemical energy storage materials.

Species distribution modelling of Baya Weaver Ploceus philippinus in Nagaon District of Assam, India: a zoogeographical analysis

Identification and mapping of the spatial distribution of species is an important aspect of zoogeographical enquiry. The habitats of many species are facing the threat of depletion in increasingly human-influenced environments. This has already led to the extinction of many species in different localities, making understanding the linkages between anthropogenic threats and species distribution of utmost importance. A GIS-based model was applied to gain an overall picture of the potential distribution of Ploceus philippinus (Baya Weaver) in and around Nagaon District in Assam. The used maxent model in the GIS environment gives a highly significant Area Under Curve (AUC) validation statistic of 0.99. Out of the total area of 3,975 km2, 596.86 km2 (15%) is demarcated as a high-potential area. Such predictions are highly useful in assisting in the conservation of threatened species under current and future climatic conditions. 

Spatial structuring of Mediterranean fisheries landings in relation to their seasonal and long-term fluctuations

The Western Mediterranean fisheries significantly contribute to the regional blue economy, despite evidence of ongoing, widespread overexploitation of stocks. Understanding the spatial distribution and population dynamics of species is crucial for comprehending fisheries dynamics combining local and regional scales, although the underlying processes are often neglected. In this study, we aimed to (i) evaluate the seasonal and long-term spatio-temporal fluctuations of crustacean, cephalopod, and fish populations in the Western Mediterranean, (ii) determine whether these fluctuations are driven by the spatial structure of the fisheries or synchronic species fluctuations, and (iii) compare groupings according to the individual species and life history-based groups. We used dynamic factor analysis to detect underlying patterns in a Landing Per Unit Effort (LPUE) time series (2009–2020) for 23 commercially important species and 33 ports in the Western Mediterranean. To verify the spatial structure of ports and species groupings we investigated the seasonal and long-term spatio-temporal fluctuations and common LPUE trends that exhibit non-homogeneous and species-specific trends, highlighting the importance of life history, environmental and demographic preferences. Long-term trends revealed spatial segregation with a north-south gradient, demonstrating complex population structures of Western Mediterranean resources. Seasonal patterns exhibited a varying spatial aggregation based on species-port combinations. These findings can inform the Common Fishery Policy on gaps challenging their regionalisation objectives in the Mediterranean Sea. We highlight the need for a nuanced and flexible approach and a better understanding of sub-regional processes for effective management and conservation – a current challenge for global fisheries. Our LPUE approach provides insight into population dynamics and changes in regional fisheries, relevant beyond the Mediterranean Sea.

Wintering raptor species distribution in a semiarid Mediterranean region: the relevance of lowlands and open habitats as stopover sites

As land-use cover types affect wintering birds’ strategies, studying their habitat suitability for species conservation is relevant. Predictive spatial models are considered excellent tools for conservation planning and improving our understanding of species distribution. Here we build models to predict the spatial distribution of raptor species that overwinter in SE Spain. We modelled the wintering raptor species distribution based on the presence-only data obtained between 2017 and 2019 and analysed their habitat preferences based on elevation and land-use cover variables. Our results show that altitude and distance to the coastline are the most important environmental factors to affect most species’ habitat suitability. Habitat type-related factors are other important predictors, and raptors subject of this study prefer lowlands and areas close to the coastline for overwintering by selecting open habitats, which include wetlands and irrigated and rainfed crops. This study highlights the importance of the habitat heterogeneity generated by wetlands and herbaceous crops within a low-altitude range as the optimal environment for wintering raptors. Such information should be considered for raptor conservation planning in human-altered landscapes.

Climate change increases threat to plant diversity in tropical forests of Central America and southern Mexico.

Global biodiversity is negatively affected by anthropogenic climate change. As species distributions shift due to increasing temperatures and precipitation fluctuations, many species face the risk of extinction. In this study, we explore the expected trend for plant species distributions in Central America and southern Mexico under two alternative Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) portraying moderate (RCP4.5) and severe (RCP8.5) increases in greenhouse gas emissions, combined with two species dispersal assumptions (limited and unlimited), for the 2061-2080 climate forecast. Using an ensemble approach employing three techniques to generate species distribution models, we classified 1924 plant species from the region's (sub)tropical forests according to IUCN Red List categories. To infer the spatial and taxonomic distribution of species' vulnerability under each scenario, we calculated the proportion of species in a threat category (Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered) at a pixel resolution of 30 arc seconds and by family. Our results show a high proportion (58-67%) of threatened species among the four experimental scenarios, with the highest proportion under RCP8.5 and limited dispersal. Threatened species were concentrated in montane areas and avoided lowland areas where conditions are likely to be increasingly inhospitable. Annual precipitation and diurnal temperature range were the main drivers of species' relative vulnerability. Our approach identifies strategic montane areas and taxa of conservation concern that merit urgent inclusion in management plans to improve climatic resilience in the Mesoamerican biodiversity hotspot. Such information is necessary to develop policies that prioritize vulnerable elements and mitigate threats to biodiversity under climate change.

Synthesis reveals approximately balanced biotic differentiation and homogenization.

It is commonly thought that the biodiversity crisis includes widespread declines in the spatial variation of species composition, called biotic homogenization. Using a typology relating homogenization and differentiation to local and regional diversity changes, we synthesize patterns across 461 metacommunities surveyed for 10 to 91 years, and 64 species checklists (13 to 500+ years). Across all datasets, we found that no change was the most common outcome, but with many instances of homogenization and differentiation. A weak homogenizing trend of a 0.3% increase in species shared among communities/year on average was driven by increased numbers of widespread (high occupancy) species and strongly associated with checklist data that have longer durations and large spatial scales. At smaller spatial and temporal scales, we show that homogenization and differentiation can be driven by changes in the number and spatial distributions of both rare and common species. The multiscale perspective introduced here can help identify scale-dependent drivers underpinning biotic differentiation and homogenization.

X-ray chemical imaging for assessing redox microsites within soils and sediments

Redox reactions underlie several biogeochemical processes and are typically spatiotemporally heterogeneous in soils and sediments. However, redox heterogeneity has yet to be incorporated into mainstream conceptualizations and modeling of soil biogeochemistry. Anoxic microsites, a defining feature of soil redox heterogeneity, are non-majority oxygen depleted zones in otherwise oxic environments. Neglecting to account for anoxic microsites can generate major uncertainties in quantitative assessments of greenhouse gas emissions, C sequestration, as well as nutrient and contaminant cycling at the ecosystem to global scales. However, only a few studies have observed/characterized anoxic microsites in undisturbed soils, primarily, because soil is opaque and microsites require µm-cm scale resolution over cm-m scales. Consequently, our current understanding of microsite characteristics does not support model parameterization. To resolve this knowledge gap, we demonstrate through this proof-of-concept study that X-ray fluorescence (XRF) 2D mapping can reliably detect, quantify, and provide basic redox characterization of anoxic microsites using solid phase “forensic” evidence. First, we tested and developed a systematic data processing approach to eliminate false positive redox microsites, i.e., artefacts, detected from synchrotron-based multiple-energy XRF 2D mapping of Fe (as a proxy of redox-sensitive elements) in Fe-“rich” sediment cores with artificially injected microsites. Then, spatial distribution of FeII and FeIII species from full, natural soil core slices (over cm-m lengths/widths) were mapped at 1–100 µm resolution. These investigations revealed direct evidence of anoxic microsites in predominantly oxic soils such as from an oak savanna and toeslope soil of a mountainous watershed, where anaerobicity would typically not be expected. We also revealed preferential spatial distribution of redox microsites inside aggregates from oak savanna soils. We anticipate that this approach will advance our understanding of soil biogeochemistry and help resolve “anomalous” occurrences of reduced products in nominally oxic soils.

Spatial and seasonal distribution of cyanobacteria Moorea species in coastal waters of Tanzania

This study aimed at identifying the presence of harmful cyanobacteria, detecting potential harmful algae toxins and their distribution in three seasons: December to February (hot dry season), March to May (rainy season), and June to November (cool dry season) of 2016. The samples were collected in five study sites in Tanzania: Tumbe, Chwaka, Paje, Bweleo in Zanzibar islands and Songosongo Island, mainland Tanzania, where skin irritation problems were observed in seaweed workers in an earlier study. The cyanobacteria from the Moorea genus were microscopically detected in the seawater, with highest concentrations in the months with the highest seawater temperature or hot dry season, than in the other two seasons. The concentration of Moorea species was significantly higher in Songosongo, Tanzania mainland than in Zanzibar Islands in all three seasons, corresponding to the higher level of nutrients of nutrients (PO43−, NO3− and NH4+) in the prior season. However, the concentrations were considered relatively low and thus not collected during an ongoing algal bloom. This is one of the first studies that detect Moorea sp. in Tanzanian seawater, and complementary studies including genome sequencing to characterize the species are warranted.

Influence of the argon admixture on the reactive oxide species formation inside an atmospheric pressure oxygen plasma jet

In this work, a new atmospheric pressure plasma generated in a wire-to-multiwire dielectric barrier discharge on pure oxygen is introduced. This special geometry of 13 wires (one central wire and 12 ones on the external tube) is feeding by a radio frequency (RF) power (13.56 MHz, 1 kW) and produces a stable discharge. The capacity of this device to produce oxygen reactive species and the influence of Ar gas mixture (1–3%) on this production are investigated. The main characteristics of this DBD plasma are measured using optical emission spectroscopy techniques. The rotational, vibrational, and excitation temperatures along with the electron density are determined from OH (A2Σ → X2Π) band and the Stark broadening of the hydrogen atomic line at 486.1 nm, respectively. The temporal evolution and spatial distribution of charged and reactive species in this plasma are also numerically studied by a Global scheme and a two-dimension fluid model based on drift–diffusion approximation. A kinetic dominated by electron collisions is obtained for this plasma. The generation and movement of electrons, positive and negative ions in the wire-to-multiwire configuration are analyzed and discussed according to changes the electric field and plasma frequency. It is shown that the density of both charged and reactive species increases by adding a small amount of argon to the oxygen plasma while the electron temperature reduces in this configuration. A high level of agreement is observed between the experimental and simulation results for the electron density and temperature in this DBD plasma.

Past, present and future in the geographical distribution of Mexican Tepezmaite cycads: Genus Ceratozamia.

Ceratozamia morettii, C. brevifrons, and C. tenuis are cycads considered endangered in montane forests in the center of Veracruz state. However, the amount of theoretical and empirical information available on the historical distribution of these species and how they could be affected in the future by the effects of climate change still needs to be increased. Our objective was to generate information on the spatial distribution of the species since the last glacial maximum, present, and future. To map the spatial distribution of species, we created a potential distribution model for each species. The spatial data used for the models included 19 bioclimatic data variables in the present, at the last glacial maximum using two models (CCSM4 and MIROC), and in the future (2080) using two models of the RCP 8.5 scenario of climate change (HadGEM2-CC and MIROC5). We found that each species occupies a unique ecoregion and climatic niche. Ceratozamia morettii and C. tenuis have a similar pattern with an expansion of their distribution area since the last glacial maximum with a larger distribution area in the present and a projected reduction in their distribution under future climatic conditions. For C. brevifrons, we also showed an increase in their distributional area since the last glacial maximum. We also showed that this expansion will continue under future climatic conditions when the species reaches its maximum distributional area. Projections about the future of these endemic cycad species show changes in their habitat, highlighting that temperate zone species (C. morettii and C. tenuis) will face imminent extinction if no effort is made to protect them. On the other hand, the tropical climate species (C. brevifrons) will be favored.

Neonicotinoids Persisting in the Sea Pose a Potential Chronic Risk to Marine Organisms: A Case from Xiangshan Bay, China (2015-2019).

Neonicotinoid insecticides (neonics) are extensively employed in agriculture and pervade various environmental matrices. However, few studies have documented the occurrence and potential chronic ecological risks of these chemicals in the marine environment. We collected 720 seawater samples from Xiangshan Bay during 2015-2019 and the integrated concentrations of seven neonics were determined using the relative potency factor method. Trend analyses using the Mann-Kendall test in time series, along with the estimation of the flux of neonics into the sea, were conducted. At last, the ecological risk of neonics was evaluated by water quality criteria derivation based on species sensitivity distribution. Our findings revealed that 47.6% of samples contained at least one neonic, with the integrated concentration of neonics ranging from 63.30 to 1684.14 ng/L. Imidacloprid and dinotefuran exhibited the highest frequency of detection in the analysis. The significance level of the Mann-Kendall test ranged from 2.16 × 10-10 to 1.21 × 10-5 (S > 0), indicating all neonics behaved with sharply increasing trends. Approximately 8.47 × 10-2 tons of neonics were discharged into Xiangshan Bay. Notably, the integrated concentrations of neonics represented a potential chronic ecological risk to marine organisms. This study provided novel insights into the spatial distribution, source, and migration of neonic species and their impacts on marine ecosystems.

Stacking pressure homogenizes the electrochemical lithiation reaction of silicon anode in solid-state batteries

Several tens of MPa stacking pressure is usually necessary to fully utilize the capacity of energy-dense silicon anode in solid-state batteries, presenting significant hurdles for real applications. It is thus critical to establish the link between the macroscopic stacking pressure and the microscopic electrochemical processes. In this work, we used titration gas chromatography to quantify the capacity-loss processes of silicon anodes under different stacking pressures. Furthermore, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, and phase-field modeling techniques were used to map the spatial distribution of chemical species (e.g., LixSi alloys), stress, and electrochemical overpotential upon (de)lithiation processes of the silicon anode. High stacking pressure was observed to significantly increase the extent that a Si anode can be lithiated because of the increased reaction homogeneity resulting from the strong electro-mechanical coupling, while its impact over lithium loss during the first cycle is rather limited. Our work provides a basis to unlock the full potential of Si-anode based solid-state batteries at near-ambient stacking pressure and calls for innovative strategies to minimize or compensate for the lithium loss at the first cycle.

Kinetic model of grating-like DBD fed with flowing humid air

This work proposes a coupled kinetic model to capture the spatiotemporal evolution behaviors of reactive species generated by a grating-like dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) operated in flowing humid air. The coupled model incorporates a zero-dimensional (0D) discharge model for the discharge filament and a 0D kinetic model or two-dimensional (2D) fluid model for the afterglow region. The model is experimentally validated by the ozone measurements under different airflow rates and power levels. With the pseudo-1D plug flow approximation, the spatial distribution of species obtained by the 0D afterglow model agrees well with the 2D fluid model. The kinetics of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in the discharge and afterglow region and the underlying pathways are analyzed. It is predicted by the model that there exists an optimal discharge power or airflow rate to acquire a maximum density of short-lived species (OH, O2(a1Δ), HO2, etc) delivered to a given location in the afterglow region. The key factor influencing the plasma chemistry is discharge power, regardless of initial species density, and less concerned with pulse width. The proposed model provides hints for a better understanding of DBD-relevant plasma chemistry operated in ambient air.

Native forest and proximity to humans are stronger drivers of Brazilian cottontail habitat use than invasive European hare

AbstractHuman activities and biological invasions have caused unprecedented biodiversity loss over the past 500 years. Proximity to humans drives the spatial distribution of species toward less disturbed habitats. Invasive species can competitively exclude native species, but species may coexist due to different habitat preferences. Here, we investigated how proximity to farms and the presence of the non‐native European hare (Lepus europaeus) influence the habitat use by the Brazilian cottontail (Sylvilagus minensis) in southeastern Brazil. We found that the probability of cottontail site use increased with native forest cover and decreased with farmhouse proximity, ranging from 0.05 (SE = 0.02) at sites close to farmhouses (≅900 m) with no native forest to 0.70 (SE = 0.15) at sites far from farmhouses (≅2500 m) dominated by native forest. Higher risk of harassment and predation by free‐roaming dogs and cats may explain the negative effect of farmhouse proximity on cottontail habitat use. We found little evidence for competitive exclusion by the European hare. Instead, our results suggest that the two species spatially segregate due to different habitat preferences. While the European hare more likely uses farmland in its native and non‐native range, our results suggest that the Brazilian cottontail is a forest dweller. Although we found only weak evidence of competitive exclusion, we advise caution because invasive species may delay the onset of detrimental effects due to initial low population densities in newly invaded areas as is the case of the European hare in southeastern Brazil.Abstract in Portuguese is available with online material.
